The
Dyno is an essential part of REPS Motorcycles' high performance
trade. It allows us to tune an engine to peak performance
and customise power delivery to individual customer needs.
By running before and after tests we can test the results
of fitting new chips, different ignition maps, fuel injection
maps, establish optimum gear change points, fuel starvation
issues, exhaust back pressure losses, ram-air efficiency
and test the results of our own in-house modifications |

Using
a dyno can reveal important information about how an engine
is performing and display it in a meaningful format. The
interpretation of that data is important (and Royston is
truly remarkable at analysing the data to achieve the optimum
set-up) but the key to improving performance is repeatability.
To be certain that changes are working, or not, all of the
Dyno runs should be as consistent as possible. Variables
such as engine temperature, chain tension and temperature,
even the tension of the straps securing the bike to the
roller can make differences, as well as the well known differences
of atmospheric pressure and air temperature. |

The
Dyno has its own built in software and applies industry standard
correction factors to compensate for variations in atmospheric
conditions. The REPS Motorcycles Dyno is in a dedicated sealed
room, with forced air induction and extraction to ensure a
consistent clean air flow across the air intake and radiator(s).
To further reduce variation Royston positions and straps every
bike on to the Dyno and performs every run himself, in exactly
the same way every time. |
After
warming the bike to operating temperature, several back
to back runs are made, including "through the gears"
and 4th gear "roll on" tests. The results of all
the runs are considered as a whole, not just the best or
worst, the customer gets a graphical print out of each run.
Having
established a base line power curve the testing of tuning
parts or components can begin and by applying the same consistent
and methodical approach on each run you can be sure that
any changes, good or bad are real and not a one-off freak
result. |
